DmC: Devil May Cry has a tough legacy to follow. Known as the series that birthed the hack n slash genre, Devil May Cry has had four entries since its initial releases in 2001. Devil May Cry 4 marks the last game in the original Devil May Cry series.
Devil May Cry 5 is probably the hardest hack'n'slash game of the 2010s. At the very top of its difficulty curve is 'Hell and Hell', a mode in which enemies behave as if they're on hard mode, and you die in a single hit. On top of this handicap, there are also no checkpoints throughout levels, forcing you to restart an entire chapter if you get hit even once.

Replaying levels will award you greatly. While you won't be able to collect gold, blue or purple gems when completing a level you've already gone through, you will collect a ton of red orbs and this is true for reloading checkpoints and quitting mid-mission as the red orbs are never removed from the game once you've collected them. When we were looking for a secret mission, for example, we constantly reloaded checkpoints and got a ton of red orbs that way since they'd respawn with every reload.
And there are others, like decrepit cherubs that hover in the air, that are ready to be pulled down to earth with a mighty whip of a chain, and huge, heavily armoured behemoths that can be destroyed only from a certain angle of weakness. Such variety means you can't simply sit back and hammer buttons to win; you have to make use of your brain as well as your thumbs to succeed. That alone makes for combat that's far more engaging than a run-of-the-mill hack-and-slasher. Plus, if you really want to spice things up, you can use Dante's stylish devil trigger ability to freeze enemies and take out a whole group of them in one huge combo.
